What Is the Networks Editor?

Prev Top Next More

Networks Editor is a web-based solution for creating, editing, and maintaining rule-compliant network data on the ArcGIS Utility Network.

It supports network editing through workflow-based processes that help users create, modify, validate and save network changes.

Who Uses VertiGIS Networks Editor?

Field Editors/Engineers: To update asset states and verify network connectivity while on-site.

Operations Managers: To check network statuses and execute trace operations.

GIS Administrator: To configure rules, permissions, templates, workflows, versions, and quality assurance processes.

Main features of Networks Editor

Create and edit network data

Networks Editor supports creating and editing network data on the ArcGIS Utility Network. During editing, the application helps you create rule-compliant features and maintain valid topology You can also edit non-network data such as construction points, lines, and boundaries.

Dedicated editing tools support common edit operations, including:

Copy: duplicate feature geometry and attributes

Split: divide a feature into multiple segments

Merge: combine multiple features into one

Multiline: edit several line features together as a set

Loop In: insert a device or feature into an existing line without breaking connectivity

Station Entry: place features by station/offset

Use the Attribute Form Designer to control which attributes can be filled with which entries.

Validate topology

After editing, validate dirty areas to identify rule violations and topology errors. Validation helps ensure that network features comply with Utility Network rules before you continue working with the data.

Query and inspect assets

Select a feature to view its attribute information, such as type, status, installation date, and associated records. You can inspect feature details without leaving Networks Editor. This is especially useful in the field or during a review.

View associations

View non-spatial associations and co-located connections between network features. This helps you inspect connectivity that is not visible from feature geometry alone.

Subnetworks

Maintain and visualize the areas of the network supplied by the same Network Controller, to understand and manage service territories and downstream impact.

Version management

Networks Editor supports editing in the Default version and in Named versions. You can save changes directly to the Default version or edit in a separate named version. Named versions support concurrent editing and allow you to reconcile and post changes to the Default version after review and validation.

Job Management

Networks Editor supports spatial jobs that group edits by owner, status, and branch version. Edits remain in the job’s branch version until you reconcile and post the changes to the Default version.

Job management supports controlled data entry by allowing review and approval steps before changes are posted. With editor tracking, you can trace edits by job, editor, and time of change.

Preset Templates

Use preset templates to create a predefined group of assets in one operation. Preset templates help you create standard asset configurations, such as pole configurations or service connections, without placing each asset separately.

Additional tools

Networks Editor also supports CSV survey point import, construction features, measurement tools, redlining, printing, Excel and shapefile export, and map sharing by link.
