A functional unit is an area within a green area. It is similar to a partial area, and VertiGIS FM Greenspaces users can use either or both to manage distinct sections within green areas.
Typically, functional unit are ideal for managing sets of inventory that should be grouped for inspection purposes. Because inspections created for functional units require employees to inspect inventory and partial areas located on the functional unit, functional units provide an easy way of inspecting all VertiGIS FM Greenspaces assets, documenting issues, and ensuring legal compliance.
Whereas partial areas are managed in the green area module alongside green areas, functional units are managed in the Playground Management module.

Playground Management Start and Search Pages
You can navigate to the existing functional units in your implementation either of two ways:
•from the Playground Management start page, by clicking the Functional Units button in the Operational Procedures section.
•on the Playground Management search page, by clicking Functional Units under Objects.
On both pages, you can double-click a functional unit to navigate to its details page.

Functional Unit List on Playground Management Search Page
Each functional unit in the VertiGIS FM database has its own details page, which you can access from the Playground Management start or search pages.
Each functional unit is divided into the sections below.
The Functional Unit sections stores the functional unit's high-level properties.
Property |
Description |
|---|---|
Number |
An identifying number or code for the functional unit. |
Name |
The name of the functional unit. |
Service Level |
The level of maintenance or monitoring the functional unit requires. Selectable options are saved in the Service Level catalog. Each service level is associated with an amount of time (or interval) in the Type of Maintenance catalog for the entry associated with the area type selected in the Area Type menu. Each option corresponds to a different interval for maintenance orders (for example, annually for Low, every 6 months for Medium, and monthly for High). |
Location |
The green area or maintenance district in which the functional unit is located. When selecting a green area or maintenance district, you must first double-click a maintenance area in which the green area or maintenance district is located. |
X / Longitude |
The longitude (x-axis) coordinate of the functional unit. |
Y / Latitude |
The latitude (y-axis) coordinate of the functional unit. |
Operational Status |
The current state of the functional unit. Selectable options are •Active •Not active •Stored •In rejection •Rejected |
Type |
The functional unit's group or category. Selectable options are saved in the Type catalog. |
Area (used) [m2] |
The area of the functional unit in square meters. VertiGIS FM populates this field with the total m2 of all the partial areas within the functional unit. |
Country |
The country in which the functional unit is located. Selectable options are activated in the Country Management administration. |
Street |
The street on which the functional unit is located. |
House Number |
The address number of the functional unit. |
Zip Code |
The functional unit's Zip or postal code. |
City |
The city in which the functional unit. |
District |
The district, state, or province in which the functional unit is located. |
Operation by |
The date as of which the functional unit is operational. |
Operational until |
The date until which the functional unit will be operational |
The Navigation section shows the functional unit's place in its VertiGIS FM Greenspaces hierarchy. This includes the maintenance district in which the functional unit is located, the maintenance area in which the maintenance district is located, and the green area in which the functional unit is located, as well as the objects beneath (i.e., located on) the functional unit (inventory, partial areas, and trees).
If the Map section is available on the functional unit details page, the functional unit's location is shown on a web map from a VertiGIS Studio application that has been integrated with VertiGIS FM.
Functional units are not associated with a street address and require polygons to appear on a web map. Therefore, they cannot be viewed on the Open Street Map (OSM).

Green Area Shown on an Integrated VertiGIS Studio Web Map
If your organization has integrated its own VertiGIS Studio web map with VertiGIS FM and mapped a layer to functional units, you can click the Locate (
) icon on the functional unit details page to manage the GIS feature associated with the functional unit.

Locate Icon on the Device Details Page
Clicking the Locate button opens the Edit Object workflow. This allows you to move the location of the functional unit's corresponding feature in the GIS, unlink the functional unit and the feature so that changes to the item in the GIS are not reflected in the VertiGIS FM database (and vice-versa), or delete the GIS feature so that the functional unit only exists as an object in VertiGIS FM.
The Maps section does not appear on the functional unit details page if functional units are not mapped to any layers in an integrated VertiGIS Studio web map and the Open Street Map (OSM) is not activated.
You can add properties for the details below if the functional unit is a playground.
Playground Details
Property |
Description |
|---|---|
Type of Playground |
The type of playground. Selectable options are saved in the Type of Playground catalog. |

Whether the playground is suitable for children. |
Number of entrances |
The number of entrances to the functional unit. |
The Partial Areas section lists the partial areas within the functional unit.

Partial Areas Section
Refer to Add Partial Areas to a Functional Unit.
The Inventory section lists the inventory items installed in the functional unit. These can include playground equipment and other assets like benches, planters, and other functional unit infrastructure. All inventory items installed in the functional unit are automatically included in inspections created for the functional unit.
Refer to Inventory Items for more information. Refer to Add Inventory to a Functional Unit for instructions to install inventory in an existing functional unit.
The Standing Orders sections lists the inspection and order intervals for the functional unit.

Standing Orders Section
Entries in this section will either generate inspections, which are listed in the Inspections section, or orders, which are listed in the Orders section. Intervals in this section can also be configured to not generate inspections and orders that are assigned to employees.
Refer to Manage Functional Unit Inspections and Orders for more information.
The Inspections section lists inspections generated or created for the functional unit.

Inspections Section
Refer to Manage Functional Unit Inspections and Orders for more information.
The Orders section lists inspections generated or created for the functional unit.
Refer to Manage Functional Unit Inspections and Orders for more information.
The Damages section lists damages documented against inventory items or partial areas within the functional unit.
Refer to Document Damages and Complete Functional Unit Inspections for more information.
