Functions of Water Lines

Prev Top Next More

In the Water domain network, the lines are structured according to type/functions. Due to the regional distinctions, this information was not inserted at the AssetTypes level. The distinctions can thus be mapped via an additional attribute, and thus also be extended more easily.

German definition from Fritsch et al., 2011 page 521 (acc. to DIN 2425 of 1975):

Feeder line
Connects water catchment plants, treatment plants, water reservoirs, and/or service areas without direct connections to the consumer.

Long-distance line
Is a feeder line over long distances, usually crossing municipal/communal boundaries.
Not included in DIN 2425!

Main line
Has a main distribution function within large supply areas (major cities) and usually no direct connection to the consumer.

Supply line
Distributes water in the service territory. The connection lines to the consumers branch off from them.

Service line
Starts at the branch point from the supply line and end with the main shut-off device of the consumer.

Further definitions and designations can be found in various standards and surveying guidelines (country-specific), such as:

Transport pipeline
Transports water between water supplies or to the supply area of pump stations and reservoirs.

Hydrant connection line
Connects fire extinguishing equipment to the mains.

House connection line

Spring catchment line
Connects the catchment(s) to the well house.

Spring drain
Connects a well with the reservoir or other wells (catchment or collection well house).

etc.

A set of rules for automatic filling or validation can be created for the function of the lines. This is also with the ulterior motive that operators usually do not know the definitions. It is possible that the identification of the main lines can be difficult, as this represents a continuation of the transport pipeline through the supply area.
