Transport pipeline/Long-distance water pipeline

Long-distance pipelines are feeder pipelines over longer distances that serve transport purposes. However, they are also defined as feeders, from the reservoir or pump station to the supply area, or used to connect different supply areas (organizational units).

Main line/Supply line

Main lines have a superordinate distribution function within large service territories (major cities). They usually do not have a direct connection to the consumer (Fritsch et al., 2011). The connection lines to the consumers branch off from them.

Service line

Connection lines begin at the branch point of the supply line and end with the main shut-off device of the consumer (usually in the connection room of the building).

ServiceLines are usually distinguished more precisely. This includes the collection of whether the line is used by one or more end-customers. If possible, this should be done by means of an evaluation and any internal lines must be taken into account.

Internal line

Internal line starts with the main shut-off device of the consumer (usually in the connection room of the building). These are the lines within the building or area for which the consumer is responsible.

Hydrant connection line

Line connecting the hydrant to the supply line (DistributionLine). This has the same character as the ServiceLine.
In Switzerland, the hydrant is not connected directly to a supply line. Connections of sprinkler systems (extinguishing system) can also be connected with the HydrantLine.

Water gathering line

Pipelines for water extraction and treatment before the water is fed into the supply network.

A more precise categorisation can be made using the AssetEntity attribute:

-  Source pipeline or extraction pipeline collects the source water and feeds it into the well chamber. (Intake pipeline)

-  Source pipe or raw water pipe: transports the water from a well chamber to a collection chamber, reservoir or pumping station; only in rare cases directly into the network.

-  Relief pipe in the extraction network (emptying of reservoirs, well chambers into a receiving watercourse or into the sewer system).
