Shut-off valve (in pipe network)
A shut-off valve is a valve used to completely open or close the entire flow cross-section of a pipe.
The following basic types of shut-off valves are available in pipe networks.
- Gate valve
- Butterfly valve
- Ball valve / tap
- Valve
The distinction is made on the basis of the closing mechanism.
The closing function of the gate valve is performed by lowering the shut-off body into the pipe. The same mechanism applies to the valve, except that in the valve, the flow of the medium takes place along the movement of the shut-off body. In the case of the tap, the closing body (usually a ball) is turned to close. The closing function of the flap also works by turning the closing body, but this body is usually a disc.
A safety shut-off valve is a special type of gate valve. It closes automatically in the event of overpressure/underpressure or excessive temperature, thereby stopping the flow. Resetting does not happen automatically, but requires manual intervention.
The fittings should be installed without tension and should not be mounted immediately behind pipe bends or T-pieces (risk of turbulence that could damage the fitting).
